GORHAM, Maine – Senior Dorina Sirois (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) scored two goals and freshman Marlaina Stickney (Gardiner, Maine) added a third to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-0 win over the Fitchburg State University Falcons in a Little East Conference field hockey contest Wednesday night at Elliot Field.
The win is the second straight for the Huskies who improve to 10-8 overall and 8-2 in the Little East Conference. Fitchburg State is now 2-14 overall and 1-8 in the LEC.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Sirois scored twice in the opening quarter to stake Southern Maine an early 2-0 lead. The Huskies' forward scored her eighth goal of the season in the seventh minute and then notched her ninth in the ninth minute. Sirois' two goals were part of a 5-0 lead in shots for the Huskies in the first quarter.
The score remained 2-0 through most of the contest. Fitchburg State outshot USM 5-3 in the third quarter, but USM sophomore goalkeeper Lindsay Pych (West Milford, N.J./Morristown-Beard) was up to the task making three saves to keep the shutout alive.
In the fourth USM upped its offensive pressure registering 11 shots in the frame, and finally broke through for a third goal with less than 30 seconds in regulation from Stickney. Stickney's late-game goal is the first of her intercollegiate career.
THE GOALKEEPERS:
Pych made four saves to earn the shutout – her seventh of the season – for the Huskies. Fitchburg's Colleen Lamprey was busy in net making 12 saves, while allowing three goals.
UP NEXT:
Southern Maine remains on the road and will take on UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (7:00 pm) in a Little East Conference match up.
