Huskies Rally For a 2-2 2OT Draw with Plymouth State

GORHAM, Maine  –  Freshmen Sean Brueninghaus (Superior, Wisc./Duluth East) and Noah Perry (Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) each scored second half goals as the University of Southern Maine Huskies rallied from a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 double overtime draw against the Plymouth State University Panthers in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Wednesday afternoon at Arold Field. 

With the draw Southern Maine stands at 0-8-3, and 0-2-1 in the Little East Conference. Plymouth State is now 1-4-2 and 0-1-1 in conference action.   

ON THE PITCH: 

             Perry assisted on the Huskies' first goal of the game in the 61st minute, and then scored his first intercollegiate goal in the 81st to score the equalizer.  Perry's goal was a strong individual effort, carrying the ball down the half before curling the ball into the net. 

            Plymouth scored both of its goal in the first 15 minutes of regulation to grab an early 2-0 lead over USM.  Alyosha Westbrook intercepted a ball and hit a low strike for a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute.  Erik Armstrong doubled the Panthers' advantage in the 13th minute connecting on a free kick just outside the box. 

            In overtime, PSU outshot Southern Maine 5-1, but Husky sophomore Cameron Atherton (Milford, Conn./Milford) made three saves to preserve the tie.  In the game overall, PSU led in shots 15-9, and held a slim advantage in corner kicks 5-4. 

THE GOALKEEPERS: 

Atheron made six saves for the Huskies in the tie, including three in overtime. Plymouth State's Linus Lindeberg made four saves on six shots on goal. 

NEXT GAME:  

            Southern Maine remains on the road and will take on Little East Conference opponent Eastern Connecticut State on Sunday (3:30 pm).
