GORHAM, Maine – Freshman Sarah Bussell (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) scored a pair of goals to lead the 15th-ranked Bates College Bobcats to a 2-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference field hockey game Wednesday evening at Hannaford Field.
Winning its third consecutive game, Bates improves to 8-3 overall. The Bobcats are undefeated on the road this season at 5-0. Halting its two-game win streak, Southern Maine drops to .500 at 8-8.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Bussell scored in the first and second quarter giving her team a 2-0 lead before the half. Bussell scored her first intercollegiate goal in the 12th minute and then doubled the Bobcats advantage in the 25th.
The Bobcats outshot the Huskies 15-6 in the contest and had a 5-3 lead in penalty corners. Four of Bates' penalty corners came in the second half.
THE GOALKEEPERS:
Sophomore Ellie Bauer (Denver, Colo./Colorado Academy) and freshman Grace Biddle (State College, Pa./State College) split time in goal with Bauer getting the start. Bauer made two saves, while Biddle made one. USM sophomore Lindsay Pych (West Milford, N.J./Morristown-Beard) made seven saves in a solid performance while absorbing the loss.
UP NEXT:
Southern Maine returns to Little East Conference action on Saturday (3:00 pm) when it hosts Keene State. Prior to the contest, USM Athletics will honor and recognize Jessie Superchi Gaudioso '05. Gaudioso, a Husky Hall of Fame member, helped USM to the 2003 Little East Conference title and is being inducted into the Little East Conference Hall of Fame.
