CASTINE, Maine – Sophomore Benjamin Musese (Lewiston-Auburn, Maine/Lewiston) scored all three goals to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-0 shut out win over the Maine Maritime Academy in a non-conference men's soccer game Wednesday night at Ritchie Field.
With its first win of the season, Southern Maine is unbeaten in its last two contests and is now 1-1-1. Maine Maritime suffers its second consecutive loss and is now 0-2.
Recording his first collegiate hat trick, Musese scored once in the first half and twice in the second to power the Huskies' offensive. Musese now has a team-leading four goals on the season through three games. Senior Sheddy Agbonsalo (Lynn, Mass./Lynn Classical) assisted on both of Musese's second-half goals, while senior Ibrahim Mohamed (Lewiston, Maine) assisted on the game-winner in the 19th minute.
The Huskies pressed MMA early and outshot the Mariners 25-13 in the game. Senior goalkeeper Charlie Mull (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) earned the win via shutout making one save. Maine Maritime goalie Andrew Coleman turned back 10 shots in the loss.
Musese ran onto a ball from Mohamed for the first goal of the game beating out a Coleman to the ball. Musese's second goal came in the 59th minute, putting the Huskies ahead comfortably 2-0, before sealing the win with a winding shot to the upper right corner on a lay-off from Agbonsalo in the 88th minute.
Southern Maine remains on the road for its next contest and will travel to UMaine Farmington on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game. .
