Keene State Edges Out Southern Maine 2-1

GORHAM, Maine  –  Junior Kelsey Roberts (Greenfield, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal in the 22nd minute to lead the Keene State College Owls to a 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference field hockey game Wednesday evening at Hannaford Field. 

With the win, Keene State remains undefeated at 6-0 and improves to 2-0 in the Little East Conference.  Ending a four-game win streak, Southern Maine is now 4-2 overall and 2-1 in conference action.   

With all of the goal scoring occurring in the first half, Keene State struck first with an unassisted goal in the 14th minute from sophomore Kayla Klein (West Brookfield, Mass./Quaboag Regional).   Southern Maine rallied minutes later to tied the game up at one in the 16th minute.   Junior Abigail Staples (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) redirected a pass from senior Kerigan Demers (Westbrook, Maine) to score her fifth goal of the season. Keene State took the lead for good just six minutes later on Roberts goal as she tipped in a pass from senior Julia Babbitt (Haddam, Conn./Haddam Killingworth). 

Keene State outshot the Huskies 18-5 in the game (6-3 in the first half), and had a 17-6 advantage in penalty corners.  Sophomore Rachel Loseby (Hartford, N.Y.) mad a pair of saves in the win, while junior Hailey Beaupre (Dayville, Conn./Killingly) earned a defensive save.   Southern Maine sophomore goalkeeper McKenzie Cormier  (Hiram, Maine/Sacopee Valley) made 11 saves in an outstanding effort in the loss.  

Southern Maine returns to action at nationally-ranked Bowdoin College on Sunday (2:00 p.m.).
