WATERVILLE, Maine – Britney Gregoire and Danita Storey combined to score three goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation to break open a 1-1 game and lead the Thomas College Terriers to a 4-1 season-opening win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Friday night at Bernatchez Field.
Playing in its season-opening game, Southern Maine starts its season with a record of 1-0. Thomas is now 1-0 to begin 2018.
Thomas' Haley Thebarge spotted the Terriers a 1-0 lead late in the first half notching her first goal of the season in the 22nd minute off of an assist from Katie Taylor. Outshooting the Huskies 4-2 in the first half, the Terriers took the one-goal advantage into the halftime break.
Southern Maine freshman Hannah Trottier-Braun (Lewiston, Maine/Saint Dominic Academy) scored the equalizer with her first intercollegiate goal with an unassisted marker in the 39th minute. Both team's battled back and forth, before Gregoire scored the first of consecutive goals in the 63rd minute to make it 2-1 in favor of Thomas. Just seconds later, Gregoire made it a two-goal advantage for the Terriers before Storey closed out the game's scoring in the 70th minute for the 4-1 final.
Southern Maine freshman goalkeeper Linsay Pych (West Milford, N.J./Morristown-Beard) mad two saves in the loss. Thomas' Leah Kruse made one save to earn the win. Thomas outshot USM 10-4 in the game and had a 6-4 lead in penalty corners.
Southern Maine remains on the road for its next contest and will play UMaine Farmington on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.).
