GORHAM, Maine - Nakira Examond led three players in double-figures with 20 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double as UMass Dartmouth defeated the University ofSouthern Maine Huskies 84-55 in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium.
With the win, UMass Darmouth remained undefeated in the Little East Conference at 10-0 and improves to 17-3 overall. The Huskies dip to 11-10 overall and 7-3 in the LEC. USM is in third place in the conference standings.
Examond was 8-for-16 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free throw line. Leah Douty and Alicia Kutil each scored 19 points and had five rebounds for the Corsairs. Douty hit five threes and was 7-for-16 from the field.
Southern Maine senior Emily Nicholson (Quispamsis, New Brunswick/Kennebecasis) led the Huskies with 13 points, adding three assists and three rebounds. Sophomore Chantel Eells (Turner, Maine/Leavitt) had 11 points, five rebounds, two assists, a steal and a blocked shot. Freshman Kristen Curley (Gorham, Maine) and sophomore Mychaela Harton (Georgia, Vt.) each had nine points.
Ahead by seven, 42-35, UMass Dartmouth used a strong third quarter to open up the game and cruise to the win. The Corsairs outscored the Huskies 20-8 in the quarter, led by 10 third quarter points from Examond. With a commanding 62-43 lead heading into the fourth, UMD shot 46.5 percent in the fourth extending their lead for the 84-55 final.
Southern Maine returns to action on Wednesday (5:30 p.m.) hosting Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference game. USM will be hosting its annual Town of Gorham Night Celebration, and will also be hosting Turn-Back-The-Clock event and the Huskies will wear uniforms harkening back to the Gorham State College era. Admission is free for the game, and the first 100 fans will receive a fan gift.
