GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Adam Floyd (Worcester, Mass./Putnam Science Academy) had a big double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Rhode Island College Anchormen to 69-52 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium.
With the win, Rhode Island College improves to 9-3 overall and evens out its LEC record at 2-2. Southern Maine dips to 3-5 overal and 1-3 in the Litte East.
Floyd was 8-for-15 from the field, including five three-pointers, to lead four RIC players in double-figures scoring. Senior Justin Campbell (New Haven, Conn./Hill Regional) also had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, helping the Anchormen to a 46-37 advantage on the glass. Freshman Deyshawn Tengbeh (East Providence, R.I.) added 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while junior Benjamin Vezele (Providence, R.I./Wilbraham & Monson) added 11 points and five boards.
Senior Sean Jany (Westbrook, Maine) led the Huskies with 15 points on 6-for-13 shooting. Jany added four rebounds, four blocked shots and two assists. Junior Jayvon Pitts-Young (Portland, Maine) had 12 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Senior Christian McCue (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) tossed in 10 points, while freshman Evan Christensen (Old Orchard Beach, Maine/Thornton Academy) had a game-high 12 rebounds.
Both teams played evenly in the first half, and RIC led the Huskies narrowly 29-28 at the break. Jany and Pitts-Young led USM with nine and eight points each in the first half, while Floyd had 12 for the Anchormen. The game stayed nip-and-tuck and was all tied up at 41-41 with 13:29 to play following a traditional three-point play from USM sophomore Kylani Lafleur (Dover, N.H./Portsmouth Christian). After the Lafleur hoop-and-the-harm, RIC pulled away from the Huskies with a 12-0 run over the next six minutes to lead 53-4 with 7:21 to go. Campbell scored eight of his 15 points in the pivotal run.
USM responded with an 8-0 spurt led by five points from junior Derek Haney (Auburn, Calif./Placer) to pull to within four of RIC, 53-49, with 4:26 to play, but Campbell answered with a layup to spur a 14-0 run by the Anchormen to build a 67-49 lead with 1:01 to play. Tengbeh was instrument in the run with seven points as RIC cruised for a 69-52 final.
USM returns to action on on Sunday (7:00 p.m.) at Bowdoin College for a non-conference game.
