RIC Edges Southern Maine With Overtime Penalty Kick

Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –  Junior Dennis Vazquez (Providence, R.I./Cranston East) converted a penalty kick in the 103rd minute to record the game-winning goal as the Rhode Island College Anchormen edged the University of Southern Maine Huskies 3-2 in double-overtime in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Winners of their last three games, the Anchormen are now 3-3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Little East.  Southern Maine falls to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in conference action.   Southern Maine has played in three overtime games this season and has a record of 1-2.

In a back-and-forth contest, Southern Maine got on the board first as senior Charlie Mull (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) collected his first goal of the season in the 37tn minute.  Mull collected the rebound off of an initial save on a penalty kick for the 1-0 USM lead.  USM held the lead until the final 44 seconds of the half when Vazquez scored the first of his two goals in the game, launching in a shot from 25 yards out.

With the game tied at 1-1 nearly 20 minutes into the second half, USM again took the lead in the 67th minute.  Freshman Riley Dinsmore-Patch (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) scored his second goal in as many games on an assist from sophomore Austin Farwell (Windham, Maine).  The Huskies' remained in front of RIC for the next four minutes before senior Komla Dogbey (Providence, R.I./Hope) was able to score the equalizer in the 71st minute forcing the overtime action.

The first overtime period was all RIC as they recorded six shot to none.  Husky freshman goalkeeper Richard Glemawu (Accra, Ghana/South Kent (Conn.)) was outstanding in goal making three of his 10 saves in the first extra stanza, including a diving stop on a header from RIC sophomore Michael Faria (West Warwick, R.I.).

RIC relied on Vazquez again in the second OT.  Carrying the ball through the midfield and beating several defenders, Vazquez was brought down in the box and awarded the penalty shot to seal the win

Glemawu finished with 10 saves in a strong effort in goal for Southern Maine.  Freshman goalkeeper Charlie Tashjian (West Warwick, RI) made five saves in the win

Southern Maine is back in action tomorrow at Bowdoin College (2:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game.  Rhode Island College travels to Roger Williams on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) for a non-conference match-up.
