Southern Maine Sweeps Maine Maritime and UNE

            GORHAM, Maine -- In a full day of women's collegiate volleyball action at the Warren Hill Gymnasium on Saturday, the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated Maine Maritime Academy 3-1 (30-28, 23-25, 25-21, 25-20) and the University of New England 3-0 (25-10, 25-22, 25-9) to extend their season-opening winning streak to three games.

            In other matches Saturday, Saint Joseph's College knocked off Maine Maritime 3-2 (25-20, 14-25, 19-25, 25-21, 15-9) and UNE topped Saint Joseph's 3-1 (25-20, 16-25, 25-21, 25-19).

            In the opening match of the day, senior Jess Williamson (Goffstown, N.H.) paced the Huskies with 17 kills and 10 digs for a double-double.  Classmate Mo Raymond (Sanbornton, N.H./Winnisquam) added 10 kills and 11 digs for her first double-double of the season.  Junior Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) quarterbacked the offense dishing out a career-high 42 assists.  Senior libero Mariah Garcia (Brighton, Colo./Central) contributed a team-high 16 assists and three service aces.

            MMA was led by sophomore Alexa Cacacie (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) with 15 kills.  Rookie Jessica D'Auria (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs, and sophomore Maggie MacMahon (Boise, Idaho/The Ambrose School) knocked down 10 kills.  Sophomore Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) had 39 assists and six digs, and sophomore libero Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led all players with 18 digs.

            In the final match of the day, the Huskies used big runs in each set to gain the advantage.  The Huskies finished with a .292 attack percentage (38-12-89) and 13 service aces.  Williamson powered down 15 kills and Raymond had another 10 kills and six service aces.  Schmitz dished out 30 assists, and Garcia dug up 11 balls.

            Junior Rene Roggenbuck (Goffstown, N.H.) had six kills to lead the UNE offense.  Senior Kristen Falcinelli (Silver Spring, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) and rookie Sydney Christiansen (Palatine. Ill.) each had eight assists.  Sophomore Paige Simoneau (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) had nine digs.

            Southern Maine, 3-0 on the season, makes its first road trip of the season to Bowdoin College next Wednesday (7:00 p.m.).  UNE will play its home opener next Thursday (7:00 p.m.) hosting Emerson College.  Maine Maritime heads to Colby College on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.) for its next match.
