USM Downs UNE in Five, Sweeps MMA

            BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's volleyball team rallied from a set down to take a hard-fought, 3-2 victory (25-13, 16-25, 20-25, 25-17, 15-13) over the University of New England Nor'easters in the opening match of a non-conference tri-match Saturday at the Harold Alfond Forum.

            USM came away victorious in the second match of the day defeating Maine Maritime Academy 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-17).  The Huskies have now won three straight, and 10 of their last 11, to improve to 15-5 on the season.

            In the final match of the day, UNE (8-11) rallied from two sets down to take a 3-2 win (24-26, 17-25, 25-14, 25-12, 15-11) over Maine Maritime (12-9).

            Against UNE, senior Jess Williamson (Goffstown, N.H.) collected her ninth double-double of the season knocking down 21 kills and digging up 12 balls.  Williamson's 21 kills mark the sixth time this season she has amassed 20 or more kills in a match.

            Sophomore middle hitters Faolain Harrington (Auburn, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) and Kylee Austin (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) combined for 20 kills.  Harrington had 10 kills and four aces, while Austin had 10 kills, a solo block and four block assists.

            Junior setter Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) directed the offense dishing out 37 assists.  Senior Mo Raymond (Sanbornton, N.H./Winnisquam) contributed four kills, five aces and 14 digs.  Senior libero Mariah Garcia (Brighton, Colo./Central) also had 14 digs.

            Junior Rene Roggenbuck (Goffstown, N.H.) paced three Nor'easters in double figures for kills with 14, and compiled an impressive .464 hitting percentage (14-1-28).  Rookie Micaela McNamara (Westminster, Mass.) had 13 kills with a .500 hitting percentage, and first-year Molly Camelo (Melrose, Mass.) added 11 kills.  Senior Kristen Falcinelli (Silver Spring, Md.) and rookie Sydney Christiansen (Palatine, Ill.) combined for 45 assists, and sophomore Katie Marsh (Melbourne, Australia) had a match-high 15 digs.

            Coming back against MMA, Williamson led the way with 10 kills and seven digs.  Rookie right side Jamie Jannarone (Windham, Maine) added seven kills (without an error) and six service aces.  Harrington contributed five kills and four aces, Schmitz dished out 30 assists, and Raymond had six kills and six digs.  Rookie Lauren Delissio (Hebron, Conn.) had a team-high nine digs.

            For the Mariners, sophomore Maggie MacMahon (Boise, Idaho) had seven kills, and classmates Alexa Cacacie (Manahawkin, N.J.) and Maryellen Musselman (West Friendship, Md.) had five kills apiece.  Junior Melissa Spaulding (Fairbanks, Alaska) contributed 21 assists and three aces.

            Southern Maine will host Saint Joseph's College for its next match, in conjunction with a fundraising effort to benefit the Cancer Community Center of Southern Maine, on Thursday (6:00 p.m.).
