NEW LONDON, N.H. -- Led by seniors Jess Williamson (Goffstown, N.H.) and Mo Raymond (Sanbornton, N.H./Winnisquam), the visiting University of Southern Maine women's volleyball team defeated Colby-Sawyer College 3-0 (25-10, 27-25, 25-17) in a non-conference match Wednesday evening at Coffin Field House.
The win was the 12th in the last 14 matches for the Huskies, and improved their overall record to 17-6. The Chargers dropped their second straight match to slide to 11-16 overall.
Williamson recorded her 12th double-double of the season knocking down 15 kills and recording 17 digs. Both totals were match highs. Raymond had a fine all-around match collecting eight kills, 14 digs and two service aces.
Sophomore middle hitters Kylee Austin (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and Faolain Harrington (Auburn, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) combined for 15 kills. Austin had nine kills on an outstanding .533 hitting percentage (9-1-15) and two blocks, and Harrington added six kills and three blocks.
Junior Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) orchestrated the USM offense dishing out 36 assists, and contributed nine digs. Senior libero Mariah Garcia (Brighton, Colo./Central) had 13 digs.
Colby-Sawyer sophomore Naarah Cox (Boston, Mass.) led the Chargers with nine kills. Junior Courtney Murray (Quincy, Mass.) added seven kills. Senior Alli Lahiff (Haverhill, Mass.) collected four kills and a team best two blocks. Sophomore setter Olivia Goodrich (Epping, N.H.) had a double-double of 23 assists and 11 digs, while sophomore Morgan Flynn (Reading, Mass.) posted a team best 14 digs.
USM easily took the first set hitting .303 (12-2-33) with Williamson picking up five kills. CSC struggled on the attack hitting -.051 (7-9-39).
The middle set went into extra time after USM rallied late in the set. Tied at 25-25, USM took the next two points on a CSC hitting error and a Raymond kill to go up 2-0.
The Huskies used a 13-5 run to break a 12-12 tied and take the decisive third set. Williamson had five kills, Austin added four and Harrington three as the Huskies had their best hitting set with a .333 percentage (16-5-33).
Southern Maine travels to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Saturday for a Little East Conference match against the Corsairs and a non-conference match with Connecticut College. Colby-Sawyer travels to Husson University on Saturday to play North Atlantic Conference matches against Husson and Maine Maritime Academy.
