Box Score WATERVILLE, Maine – Sophomore Alexa Srolovitz (Montreal, Quebec/New Hampton School) scored a game-high 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, including a 3-of-5 mark from three-point range, but it wasn't enough as the University of Southern Maine Huskies fell on the road at the Colby College Mules Tuesday night in a non-conference women's basketball game.
With the win, Colby edges above .500 on the season at 10-9. Southern Maine falls to 3-17 with the loss.
Colby outscored USM 24-16 through the first two quarters, led by eight points from Haley Driscoll. Driscoll led the Mules with a double-double scoring a team-high 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Katie McCrum added nine points and six rebounds, while Emily Davis tossed in seven points and eight rebounds, including six offensive boards.
Srolovitz led all scorers with her 18 points, one point shy of her career high, and added three rebounds. Freshman Chantel Eells (Turner, Maine/Leavitt) added nine points, four rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots, while classmate Jackie Luckhardt (Londonderry, N.H.) added six points, four assists, and two steals. Junior Emily Nicholson (Quispamsis, New Brunswick/Kennebecasis Valley) scored five points and grabbed a career and game-high 12 rebounds, and had four assists.
Trailing by eight heading into the second half, USM made a push and outscored the Mules 17-13 in the third quarter. Nicholson and Eells each scored five points to lead the Huskies. Colby scored the first bucket of the quarter on a McCrum layup before USM rattled off a 12-2 run to knot the game up at 28 with 3:16 left in the quarter. Both teams exchanged points over the next few possessions and the Huskies took their first lead of the game, 33-32, with 1:42 left in the frame on a three-pointer from Srolovitz. The Mules answered back however, scoring the final five points of the quarter on a three from Jackie Albanese and a layup from McCrum to take a 37-33 lead into the fourth.
USM stayed within two possessions of the Mules, and trailed by one, 43-42, on a three from junior Kayla Stacy (Auburn, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) with 3:13 left on the clock. Driscoll answered for the Mules netting back-to-back buckets, making it a five-point game, 47-42 with 2:24 on the clock. USM continued to stick with Colby, and trailed by one possession, 49-46, with 33 seconds to play on a pair of free throws form Srovlovitz, but the Mules closed out the game on the line making 4-of-4 for the 53-46 final.
Southern Maine returns to Little East Conference action and Hill Gymnasium on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) when it hosts Keene State College.
