Western Connecticut Downs Southern Maine 77-47

DANBURY, Conn.  – Senior forward Emily Dobson (Westerly, R.I.) scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team over visiting University of Southern Maine, 77-47 at Feldman Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Western Connecticut is now 12-7 overall and 5-4 in the Little East Conference. Southern Maine is now 3-16 and 2-7 in the LEC.

Western Connecticut seniors Samantha Smith (Wallingford, Conn.) and Alyssa Eannotti (Shelton, Conn.) added 12 and 10 points, joining Dobson in double-figures.  Eannotti yanked down a game-high nine rebounds, while Kaitlyn LaBonte (South Windsor, Conn.) had balanced game, scoring nine points, collecting six boards and dishing out a game-high seven assists.

Juniors Miranda Nicely (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) and Emily Nicholson (Quispamisis, New Brunswick) led Southern Maine tallying 11 and 10 points, respectively. Freshman Chantel Eells (Turner, Maine/Leavitt) added eight points, and classmate Jackie Luckhardt (Londonderry, N.H.) had six points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals.

The Colonials raced out to an early lead as it led, 26-10 after the first quarter.  WCSU led by as many as 23 points in the second quarter following a three-point bucket by sophomore Tashai Price (Vernon, CT).  Western's settled for a 19-point lead, 43-24, at the break.

The Colonials host to College of New Rochelle on Wednesday, February 1.  Game time is slated for 6 pm.  Southern Maine travels to nearby Colby College for a 5:30 pm meeting with the Mules on Tuesday, January 31.
