Southern Maine Volleyball Rolls Past UMPI and Castleton

Huskies Host UNE on Wednesday

            GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's volleyball team swept its non-conference tri-match Sunday defeating the University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls and Castleton University Spartans at the Warren Hill Gymnasium to extend its winning streak to three matches.

            The Huskies (3-1) defeated the Owls 3-0 (25-4, 25-18, 25-9) to open the day's activities, and came back in the final match to down the Spartans 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-7).  Castleton (1-2) downed UMPI in the middle match 3-0 (25-21, 25-10, 25-20).

            Senior setter and co-captain Megan Nilson (Granby, Conn.) paced the Huskies by passing out 43 assists and serving up 11 aces in the two matches.  Nilson had 22 assists and seven of the Huskies' 19 aces in the opener against UMPI, and 21 assists and four aces against Castleton.

            Freshman Alayna McNally (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) led the Huskies at the net against UMPI knocking down 10 kills.  Rookie Jenna Graves (Corinth, Texas) had 14 digs on the back line.

            Against Castleton, junior Jess Williamson (Goffstown, N.H.) had a match-high 16 kills while sophomore Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) contributed a double-double with 10 kills and 14 assists.  Graves posted 17 digs.

            Senior Abby Jewett (Bass Harbor, Maine) had a team-high four kills and seven digs for the Owls against USM.  Jewett came back against Castleton to knock down 11 kills.

            Senior Cassidy Tedeschi (Pascoag, R.I.) paced three players with double-figure kills for Castleton against UMPI swinging for 13 kills.  Senior J'Leen Diaz (West Hartford, Conn.) added 11 kills and rookie Olivia Perkins (Lancaster, Mass.) had 10.  Senior setter Alex Madsen (Averill Park, N.Y.) passed out 25 assists and had seven digs.

            Southern Maine is at home on Wednesday (6:00 p.m.) hosting the University of New England.  UMPI is off until Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when it plays a tri-match at Becker College.  Castleton hosts Southern Vermont College on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.).
