RIC Outlasts Southern Maine 3-1

Box Score
GORHAM, Maine – Junior Kombla Dogbey (Providence, R.I./Hope) scored two goals and assisted on a third to lead the Rhode Island College Anchormen to a 3-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

The win is the third straight for the Anchormen and improves their record to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the Little East.  Southern Maine falls to 0-4-2 with the loss.

Dogbey struck early for the Anchormen giving them a 1-0 lead with just 4:11 gone in the game.  Dogbey placed the ball to the far post after receiving a through ball and touching it towards the end line to create space for the goal.  Dogbey doubled RIC's advantage in the 30th minute as the Anchormen took a 2-0 lead into the half.  On his second goal of the game, Dogbey had a fantastic individual effort to carry the ball into the box before beating USM's defense and drawing out the goalkeeper for an easy goal.    RIC dominated the play in the first half outshooting USM 13-0, but the Huskies remained within striking distance thanks in part to the outstanding play in goal from starting goalkeeper Charlie Mull (Portland, Maine/Cheverus).  Mull made four saves in the first half.

In the second half, Mull moved to the field as a forward and was replace in net by sophomore Simon Hulbert (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island). With Mull up front the Huskies were able to play more evenly with RIC and pulled to within a goal of the Anchormen in the 65th minute.  Mull received a through ball to break by the RIC defense and then rocketed in his second goal of the season to put the Huskies back in the game.

Southern Maine continued to pressure RIC and nearly had the equalizer moments later when senior Kyle Curley's (Gorham, Maine) header off of a corner kick was drilled on frame, but was denied by a tremendous effort from RIC senior goalkeeper Chris Moura (Rumford, R.I./East Providence).

With the Huskies applying the pressure, the Anchormen were able to secure an insurance goal in the final 10 minutes of regulation.   This time Dogbey carried the ball down the right side of the field before beating his defender to the inside and laying off a pass to his left to a wide open junior Ty Catunto (New Bedford, Mass.) at the top of the box.  Catunto wasted little time striking the ball into the net for the 3-1 RIC lead in the 82nd minute.

Mull finished the game allowing two goals in 45 minutes while making four saves.  Hulbert made three saves in the final 45 minutes.  Moura made one save in the win for RIC.

Southern Maine travels to nearby University of New England for its next contest on Monday (5:00 p.m.) in a non-conference game. Rhode Island College heads to Framingham State University on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game.
