Bowdoin Shuts Out Southern Maine 5-0

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine –  Senior Matt Dias Costa (Natick, Mass./Rivers School) scored a pair of first half goals as the Bowdoin College Polar Bears cruised to a 5-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's soccer Tuesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

With the win, Bowdoin improves to 2-1 on the season.  The Polar Bears lone loss of the season was a 1-0 setback to the defending National Champions, Amherst College. Southern Maine is now 0-3-2 on the season.

Dias Costa scored both of his goals before 10 minutes had expired in the opening half to quickly put Bowdoin ahead of the Huskies.  Junior Ethan Ellsworth (Greenlawn, N.Y./Chaminade) assisted on the first goal with a well-time flat ball across the box for a one-touch goal from Dias Costa in the fifth minute.  Five minutes later, Dias Costa hit a half-volley off of an as from junior Sam Ward (Wellesley Hills, Mass./Saint Marks School).   Bowdoin took a 3-0 lead into the half when Ward knocked one in on a double-assist from sophomores Levi Morant (Bedford, N.Y./Hackley School) and Jake Stenquist (Dover, Mass./Dover-Sherborn).  Morant played the ball forward to Morant who lofted a cross to Ward for a one-time strike.

Bowdoin added two more goals in the second half for the 5-0 final. Ellsworth scored in the 65th minute on an assist from Morant, while sophomore Matty McColl (Victoria, B.C./Saint Michaels University School) added the fifth goal in the 73rd minute assisted by junior Wilson MacMillan (Fairbault, Minn./Hyde School).

Bowdoin starter Stevie Van Siclen (Carlisle, Mass./The Rivers School) earned the win, making one save in 45 minutes.  Senior Noah Safian (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity Regional) played the final 45 minutes and did not make a save.  USM starter sophomore Simon Hulbert (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) took the loss allowing three goals and making two saves in the first half.  Junior Charlie Mull (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) made five saves in the second half allowing two goals.
