Seniors Lead Southern Maine Over Plymouth State 59-50 

GORHAM, Maine  –   Celebrating their Senior Game, the four University of Southern Maine seniors combined to score 42 of the Huskies' 59 points in a 59-50 win over the Plymouth State University Panthers in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at Fifield Court. 

With the win, Southern Maine improves to 14-10 overall and 8-5 in the Little East, and secures a home playoff game versus an opponent to be determined on Tuesday, February 23.  The loss is the 12th straight for the Panthers who fall to 6-18 overall and 0-13 in the Little East.

Senior Ella Ramonas (Portland, Maine/Deering) scored a team-high 15 points, grabbed seven rebound and had four assists, while classmate Megan Pelletier (Winslow, Maine/Messalonskee) had 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists, four blocked shots and three steals.  Senior Gretchen Anderson (Kittery Point, Maine/St. Thomas Aquinas) notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and senior Jill Madden (North Andover, Mass.) had six points and three rebounds.

PSU freshman Brittany Roche (Londonderry, N.H.) led all scorers with 17 points off of the bench, while junior Ace Lawrence (Middletown, Conn.) added 14 points.  Junior Kayla Wyland (Melrose, Mass.) had a team-high seven rebounds, while junior Savannah Miller (Smithtown, N.Y.) had four assists.

The Huskies led the game wire-to-wire scoring the first eight points of the contest and jumping out to a 19-11 lead after the first quarter.  Pelletier and Ramonas scored on back-to-back hoops to open the game establishing control in the paint, including a traditional three-point play from Ramonas, and sophomore Kayla Stacy (Auburn, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) capped the run with a three.  Stacy finished with seven points, a career-high eight rebounds and three assists.

PSU fought back to open the second and pulled to within three, 23-20, on a 9-4 run.  Roche scored four of her points in the run for the Panthers which was ended with an offesnvie rebound and a layup from freshman Kailyn Aguiar (Acushnet, Mass./Bishop Stang) with 4:22 to play in the quarter.  With its lead trimmed to one possession, the Huskies answered back with a 7-0 run on points in the paint from Ramonas and Pelletier and another three from Stacy.  Stacy's second three of the game made it a 30-20 USM lead with 3:03 left in the quarter, and took a 35-23 lead at the half.

USM continued to roll in the third and ballooned its lead 18 points, 46-28, on a traditional three-point play from Anderson with 5:41 to play.  From there, USM held a comfortable margin the rest of the way en route to the win.

Southern Maine completes its regular season schedule on the road at UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).  Plymouth State travels to Western Connecticut on Saturday (1:00 p.m.)
