Western Connecticut Defeats Southern Maine 75-35

GORHAM, Maine  – Sophomore Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, N.Y./Arlington) scored a game-high 16 points to lead three players in double figures as the Western Connecticut State Colonials earned a 75-35 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Fifield Court.

The win is the fourth straight for the Colonials who are 2-0 in the Little East and 5-3 overall.  Southern Maine drops to 2-7 with the loss and 1-1 in the conference.

Sherwood knocked down four three-pointers to pace the Colonials.  Senior Samantha Smith (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) scored 14 points off of the bench with a 5-for-8 shooting effort while junior Kaitlyn LaBonte (South Windsor, Conn.) added 12 points.  Senior Alecia Dulaire (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Southern Maine sophomore Kimberly Howrigan (Fairfield, Vermont/Bellows Free Academy) led the Huskies with 10 points and eight rebounds.  Freshman Chantel Eells (Turner, Maine/Leavitt) added nine points and six rebounds. 

Western Connecticut took a large 36-13 lead at the half as the Huskies shot an ice cold 1-for-12 in the first quarter.  Smith had eight points for the Colonials at the half.  In the second half, Western Connecticut grew its lead to 56-25 at the end of the third quarter punctuated by a quarter-ending three from Sherwood.  The Colonials remained in control and outscored USM 19-10 in the final frame for the final.

Southern Maine is off for finals week and returns to action on Sunday (1:00 p.m.) against Plattsburgh State in the 2016 Cruisin' Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Western Connecticut travels to Mt. St. Mary on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
