Box Score PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Dan Shaw (Winchester, England/Peter Symonds) and junior Nick Rutherford (Sydney, Australia/Batesman Bay) each scored two goals to lead the Plymouth State University Panthers to a 6-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Plymouth State improves to 4-6-1 overall and 1-3 in the Little East. Southern Maine drops to 1-9-3 overall and remains winless in conference action at 0-4.
Southern Maine grabbed the first lead of the game when junior Sheddy Agbonsalo (Lynn, Mass./Lynn Classical) notched his first goal of the season with an unassisted strike in the 23rd minute. The Huskies' lead was short-lived however, as Shaw pulled the Panthers even with an unassisted goal of his own in the 24th minute. Plymouth State went ahead of USM in the 36th minute when Rutherford tallied the game winner. PSU took its 2-1 lead into the break.
In the second half, sophomore Truls Julseth (Fredrikstad, Norway/Frederik II) completed an assist from Rutherford to make it 3-1 in the 55th minute, before Rutherford made it 4-1 in the 65th minute. Shaw tallied his second goal of the game in the 77th minute followed by a goal from junior Chris Gonzalez (Stratford, Conn.) in the 82nd minute for the 6-1 final.
Senior Felix Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden/Tyreso Gymnasium) earned the win in goal for PSU making one save. Sophomore Simon Hulbert (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) made nine saves in the loss.
Southern Maine hosts UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in Little East Conference action. Plymouth State travels to Western Connecticut on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).
