Box Score LEWISTON, Maine – Junior Jessie Moriarty (Springfield, Mass./Longmeadow) scored her seventh goal of the season in the 34th minute to break open a scoreless draw to help the Bates College Bobcats to a 4-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference field hockey game Tuesday night.
Earning its fourth consecutive win, Bates improves to 8-5 overall. Southern Maine falls to 7-10 with the loss.
Despite outshooting USM 14-1 in the first half, it took the Bobcats until the final minutes of the opening stanza to get on the board. Moriarty tallied her goal off of an assist from Emma Patterson to secure the eventual game winner
Bates tacked on three more goals in the second half to seal the victory. Sophomore Taylor Lough (Little Compton, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey School) scored an unassisted goal in the 54th minutes, followed by back-to-back goals from freshman Isabel Garcia-Moreno (Baltimore, Md./Friends School) in the 55th and 58th minutes respectively.
Bates finished the game with a 23-5 edge in shots. Bobcat goalkeeper sophomore Adelae Durand (Cumberland, R.I./Lincoln School) made two saves to earn the shut out victory. Freshman Elizabeth Amadei (Falmouth, Maine) made seven saves in the loss.
Southern Maine hosts Fitchburg State on Saturday (11:00 a.m.) when it returns to Little East Conference action. Bates eturn to NESCAC action Saturday morning when they visit defending national champion Middlebury for an 11:00 a.m. contest.
