Box Score #10 UMass Boston Rolls by Southern Maine
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Daniel Morales (San Diego, Calif.) scored a career-high six goals and had one assist as the 10th-ranked University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 9-0 in a Little East Conference men's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
The win was the 10th straight for the unbeaten Beacons who are 10-0-0 overall and 3-0-0 in LEC play. The Huskies dropped to 1-6-3 overall and remain winless in three LEC matches.
The Beacons unleashed a potent offense scoring three times in the opening six minutes. Morales scored the first two markers, the first coming when he flicked a cross from the left-side end line by senior Edmilson Barros (Praia, Cape Verde/Madison Park Tech. Voke), and the second on a header from a right-wing cross by senior Klismam Mendes (Fogo, Cape Verde/Brighton).
Sophomore Mohamed Kenawy (Revere, Mass.) added the third goal converting a feed from Morales.
Morales added goals in the 17th and 30th minutes as the Beacons built a 5-0 lead. The visitors from Boston dominated the first half outshooting the Huskies 16-1.
UMB continued to stretch its lead in the second half. Rookie Ocane Williamson (Spanishtown St. Catherine, Jamaica) scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season with a blast from close range in the 47th minute. Morales would complete his double hat trick with goals in the 52nd and 62nd minutes. Kenawy added a second marker after a USM miscue in the back in the 78th minute.
UMass Boston freshmen goalkeepers Omar Castro-Dreher (Woonsocket, R.I.) and Aidan Carter (Weymouth, Mass.) combined for the shutout. Each played a half and was not called upon to make a save. USM sophomore goalie Simon Hulbert (Bar Harbor, Maine/MDI) made eight saves.
Southern Maine is back at Hannaford Field tomorrow afternoon (4:00 p.m.) hosting Saint Joseph's (Me.) College in a non-conference match. UMass Boston travels to Babson College on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) for a non-conference game.
