Husson Eludes Southern Maine 65-64

Box Score
BANGOR, Maine – Chandler Guerrette drove the lane and hit a layup as time ran down lifting the Husson University Eagles to a 65-64 win over the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at Newman Gym.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 6-3, halting a two game skid.  Southern Maine sees its two-game win streak come to an end and evens out its record at 6-6.

Guerrette finished with 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting as one of two Husson players in double-figures.  Kenzie Worcester led Husson with 16 points, adding five rebounds, four assists and four steals.  Rebecca Young and Victoria McIntyre each had eight points, while McIntyre led the Eagles with eight rebounds.

Three players scored in double digits for the Huskies.  Senior Gretchen Anderson (Kittery Point, Maine/St. Thomas Acquinas) was 5-for-10 from the field for 16 points, adding six rebounds and four steals.   Senior Ella Ramonas (Portland, Maine/Deering) tossed in 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting, while senior Megan Pelletier (Winslow, Maine/Messalonskee) added 13 points and six rebounds before fouling out of the game.

The Huskies fell behind 16-6 after the first quarter, but rallied in the second quarter, outscoring Husson 18-10 to trail 26-24 at the break. McIntyre had seven points for the Eagles in the first frame as Husson held USM to just 3-of-13 shooting in the first quarter.  In the second quarter, Husky sophomore Kayla Stacy (Auburn, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) led the charge for USM with six points on a pair of threes.

Husson held for a 42-41 lead after three quarters were played as USM outscored the Eagles 17-16 in the third.  The Eagles were led by Worcester who scored seven of her 16 points in the quarter, while USM's Anderson knocked in five of her 16.

The game remained tight in the fourth with the lead exchanging hands nine times in the final 10 minutes of action.  Guerrette put the Eagles ahead 63-60 on a pair of free throws with just 21 seconds remaining but the Huskies were able to score four unanswered points to take a 64-63 lead with just under six seconds to play.  After Guerrette's free throws and a USM timeout, Anderson converted a layup making it a one-point game.  The Huskies' full court pressure generated a much-needed turnover, and Ramonas willed her way in the paint for the go-ahead basket 64-63.  With the game on the line and a Husson timeout, the Eagles inbounded the ball on their half of the court and Guerrette was able to roll off of a screen and drive the center of the lane for the game-winner.

Southern Maine hosts Keene State on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in a Little East Conference game.  Husson
