Box Score Southern Maine Falls to Salve Regina 3-1
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- Sophomore Briana D'Avolio (Reading, Mass.) scored all three goals to give the Salve Regina University Seahawks a 3-1, come-from-behind victory over the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies in a New England Hockey Conference game Saturday night at Howard Rink.
The victory snapped a five-game losing streak for the Seahawks, and improved their record to 5-7-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the conference. The Huskies fell to 2-12-1 overall and 1-6-1 in NEHC play.
Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead in the first period when junior Ally Vanidestine (Bangor, Maine) tallied her second goal of the season at 4:12. Juniors Katie Couture (Harrisville, R.I.) and Olivia Barragree (Red Lodge, Mont.) picked up the assists.
The Huskies' lead stood until D'Avolio tied the score at 6:34 of the second period with her ninth goal of the season. Seniors Cheyenne Boyd (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Shelby Johnson (Sterling, Mass.) set up D'Avolio. D'Avolio put the Seahawks ahead for good at 17:09 netting a short-handed goal after taking a pass from senior Danielle Phalon (Stoneham, Mass.).
D'Avolio completed her hat trick netting an empty-net goal with 28 seconds remaining.
Southern Maine had a 25-21 edge in shots on goal. Junior Colleen Marcik (Madison, Conn.) earned the win in goal stopping 24 shots. USM rookie goalie Britney Evangelista (North Smithfield, R.I.) had 18 saves before begin lifted for the extra attacker in an effort to get a tying goal.
Southern Maine returns home next Friday (4:00 p.m.) to play Holy Cross. Salve Regina will entertain the University of Massachusetts Boston next Friday (7:00 p.m.).
