Bowdoin Overcomes Southern Maine in OT 3-2

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Rookie Maegan Sheehan (Middleton, Ill.) scored a power-play goal less than a minute into overtime to give the Bowdoin College Polar Bears a 3-2, come-from-behind victory over the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference game Tuesday evening at Watson Arena.

The win was the second straight, and fourth in the last five games, for the Polar Bears who improved to 5-5-0 overall.  The Huskies dropped the fifth straight game, and second straight in overtime, to fall to 2-10-1 overall.

Sheehan scored her second goal of the season on a shot just inside the far post from the right faceoff circle.  Classmate Casey Nunnelly (Dover, Mass.) and senior co-captain Ariana Bourque (West Barnstable, Mass.) earned the assists on the winning goal.

Southern Maine jumped out to a 2-0 in the opening ten minutes of play on a pair of goals from junior Katie Couture (Harrisville, R.I.).  Couture put USM up 1-0 at 3:08 after taking a centering pass from senior Cassandra Sherman (North Smithfield, R.I.) and firing a shot off the far side post.  Junior Lynn Kozlowski (Stoneham, Mass.) picked up the second assist on the play.  Less than seven minutes later, Couture doubled the Huskies advantage, again set up by Sherman and Kozlowski, with a shot from the left circle.

The home side cut the Huskies' lead in half at 2:36 of the second period when junior Madeline Hall (Edina, Minn.) found sophomore Julie Dachille (Venetia, Penn.) at the right post for her second goal of the season.

Bowdoin forced the game into extra time tying the score with less than six minutes to play in regulation.  Down a skater after being whistled for too many players, sophomore Miranda Bell (Plano, Texas) was able to gain control of the puck in the Huskies' end and fed rookie Marissa Fichter (Duxbury, Mass.) for the tying goal.

First-year goalie Sophia Lattanzio (Montclair, N.J.) had 22 saves to earn the win for the Polar Bears.  USM rookie goaltender Britney Evangelista (North Smithfield, R.I.) stopped 26 shots.

Southern Maine hits the road this weekend for a two-game road trip.  The Huskies will play at Manhattanville College on Friday (4:00 p.m.) followed by a game against Salve Regina University on Saturday (7:00 p.m.).  Bowdoin will be at home this weekend for a two-game series against nationally ranked Amherst College.
