Box Score 2 Southern Maine Sweeps UMPI and Castleton
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's volleyball team got back to the .500 mark Sunday by sweeping the University of Maine at Presque Isle and Castleton University in a pair of non-conference matches at the Warren Hill Gymnasium.
Southern Maine opened the tri-match with a 3-0 victory (25-8, 25-11, 25-8) over UMPI. Castleton dispatched with UMPI in the second match 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-20). USM finished the day's proceedings by defeating Castleton 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-18).
The two wins lift the Huskies' overall record to 2-2 after the first weekend play. Castleton is now 1-2, and UMPI remains winless after five straight road matches.
Sophomore transfer Robbi Termentozzi (Grand Junction, Colo.) paced the Huskies' attack in the opening match against UMPI with 11 kills on 17 attacks (.588 attack pct.; 11-1-17). Termentozzi also had three blocks. Junior Megan Nilson (Granby, Conn.) dished out 15 assists, and had six service aces and six digs. Rookie Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) had 11 assists and two aces.
Senior Hannah Boyce (Bar Harbor, Maine) and junior Abby Jewett (Bass Harbor, Maine) each had three kills for UMPI. Senior Morgan Swan (Caribou, Maine) dug up 12 balls.
Against Castleton, sophomore Jess Williamson (Goffstown, N.H.) showed the form that made her the Little East Conference Rookie of the Year last season compiling 12 kills, four service aces and eight digs. Classmate Mo Raymond (Sanbornton, N.H.) had nine kills, and Nilson dished out 18 assists and had five digs.
Junior Brittany Brayman (Hartford, N.Y./Hartford Central) led Castleton with six kills and eight digs. Junior J'Leen Diaz (West Hartford, Conn./Northwest Catholic) contributed five kills.
In the UMPI-Castleton match, Castleton compiled a .329 attack percentage (38-12-79) over the three sets. Senior Amanda Chambers (Lake George, N.Y.) had nine kills, and classmate Kaylee Pratt (Averill Park, N.Y.) knocked down eight kills. Chambers also had 11 digs to share team-high honors with junior libero Kristi Lawless (Fort Montgomery, N.Y.).
Freshman Hannah Williams (Park Falls, N.S.) led UMPI with five kills and 10 assists, while Swan and Boyce each had four kills. Swan also had 10 digs.
Southern Maine will travel to Bangor, Maine, on Tuesday for its next match at Husson University. UMPI will host the University of Maine at Machias for its home opener on Wednesday (5:00 p.m.). Castleton will play its home opener on Thursday (7:00 p.m.) against Southern Vermont College.
