Dumond Leads St. Joseph's Past Southern Maine 2-1

Box Score
GORHAM, Maine – Junior Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) scored a goal in each half to lead the St. Joseph's College (Maine) Monks to a 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference field hockey game Tuesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

With the win, the Monks extend their winning streak to four games and improve to 4-1 overall.  St. Joseph's has not lost since dropping its season-opener 3-2 to Husson University.  Southern Maine drops its second straight game to fall to 4-5.

Dumond scored the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute to putting the Monks ahead 1-0.  After receiving a pass from senior Meghan Williams (Greenland, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas), Dumon launched a hard and high driven shot that ricocheted off of the padded hand of Southern Maine junior goalie Amanda Kasbohm (York, Maine).  The Monks' lead was short-lived, however, as the Huskies surged back to tie the game in the 25th minute.  Huskies' senior captain Allison Ward (Rockland, Maine/Oceanside) laced in her fourth goal of the season after receiving an insertion pass from sophomore Kaitlin Hilton (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) on a penalty corner to send both teams into the break tied at one goal each.

In the second half, the game seemed destined for overtime with the score locked at one all in the 64th minute.  The Monks, however, benefitted from a series of four penalty corners before Dumond connected on her second goal of the game and eighth of the season in the 66th minute.  Dumond's game-winner was an unassisted tally as she collected a rebounded ball in front of the cage.

The game was evenly played between the two local rivals with St. Joseph's holding a slim 11-10 advantage in shots and an 11-9 edge in penalty corners.  Kasbohm finished the game making seven saves in the loss.  Huskies' sophomore Tayla Smedberg (Oxford, Maine/Oxford Hills) made a defensive save. St. Joseph's freshman Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) played strong in net making three saves and several key plays.  Senior Chelsea Bordeau (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) had a defensive save for the Monks.

Southern Maine returns to Little East Conference action on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) when it travels to Westfield State.  St. Joseph's travels to Salem State on Thursday (6:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game.
