Colby Stops Southern Maine 4-0

Huskies Host Plymouth State on Friday (4:00 p.m.)

            WATEVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College women's ice hockey team broke open a scoreless game in the second period scoring three times en route to a 4-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine Tuesday night in a non-conference game at the Alfond Rink.

            The win was the third in the last four games, and fifth in the last seven, for the Mules who improved to 11-9-0 overall after an 0-4 start.  It also gave the Mules a sweep of the teams' regular season home-and-home series.  The Huskies had their two-game winning streak snapped and fell to 6-12-1 on the season.

            After a scoreless first period where the Mules out shot the Huskies 9-5, it took just 15 seconds in the second period for the home side to take the lead.  Sophomore Delaney Flynn (Scituate, Mass.) scored her sixth goal of the season converting from juniors Elisa Rascia (Park Ridge, Ill.) and Maddie Dewhirst (Hanover, N.H.).

            Nine minutes later, senior Jackie Tavella (East Longmeadow, Mass.) tallied her second goal of the campaign while the Mules enjoyed the power play.  In the final minute of the period, junior Megan Fortier (Falmouth, Maine) potted her fifth goal off assists from Flynn and sophomore Katie McLaughlin (Glenburn, Maine).

            Senior Lauren Guarente (Wellesley, Mass.) added the final marker midway through the final period.  McLaughlin and Fortier picked up the two assists.

            Colby junior goalie Angelica Crites (Middleboro, Mass.) earned her first career shutout stopping 16 shots.  USM junior goalie Nia Kelly (Santa Rosa, Calif.) had 19 saves in a losing effort.

            Colby finished the game with a 23-16 edge in shots on goal and converted 1 of 5 power-play chances.  Southern Maine was 0 for 3 with the man advantage.

            Southern Maine returns home after four straight road games on Friday (4:00 p.m.) hosting Plymouth State University.  The Mules will host Wesleyan University for a two-game series on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Saturday (3:00 p.m.).
