Colby Holds Off Southern Maine 2-1
WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College senior goaltender Angelica Crites (Middleboro, Mass.) made a number of fine stops and she received two goals from her teammates in the second period as the Mules held on for a 2-1 non-conference win over University of Southern Maine on Tuesday at Alfond Rink.
Both goalies had outstanding games to keep it close. Crites had 24 stops, with a number of them being difficult saves. Southern Maine sophomore goalie Courtney Davis (Woburn, Mass.), making her first appearance of the season, stopped 37 shots, including 15 in the second period when Colby put on a lot of pressure.
Senior Cassandra Sherman (North Smithfield, R.I.) opened the scoring for the Huskies tallying her second goal of the season with just six seconds left in the opening period.
Trailing 1-0 after a period, Colby (2-1) quickly evened the game when sophomore Bella Papapetros (North Andover, Mass.) scored her third of the year just 23 seconds into play after an assist from junior Delaney Flynn (Scituate, Mass.).
The Huskies (1-5-1) had four of the six penalties in the second period and the Mules capitalized on one for the game-winning goal. Sophomore Sasha Fritts (Darien, Conn.) scored her second of the season from Papapetros and junior Katie McLaughlin (Glenburn, Maine) at 10:37 with the extra attacker.
Crites made 11 of her 24 saves in the final period, while Davis had at least 10 saves or more in all three periods.
Southern Maine is off until December 4 when the Huskies will host Endicott College for a non-conference game. Colby will entertain the University of Massachusetts Boston on Sunday (2:00 p.m.) in a non-conference contest.
