BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England started the fourth quarter with a 15-0 run to erase a two-point deficit and rally for a 74-62 victory over the University of Southern Maine in non-conference women's basketball action Tuesday evening (Nov. 17) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
Ranked 17th in the D3Hoops.com preseason poll, UNE (1-0) has won seven of its last eight meetings with the Huskies, who dipped to 1-2 on the young season.
Alanna Vose (SR/Cushing, Maine) established her career high by pouring in 23 of her 29 points after halftime, including 10 in the decisive fourth quarter. She finished with five 3-pointers and was 6-for-7 at the free throw line. Alicia Brown (JR/Greenland, N.H.) had 15 points for the Nor'easters and Sadie DiPierro (SR/South Portland, Maine) added 14, which included four shots from beyond the arc.
For the Huskies, Ella Ramonas (SR/Portland, Maine) tallied a team-high 18 points. Alex Srolovitz (Montreal, Quebec) supported with 14 points and Gretchen Anderson (SR/Kittery Point, Maine) added 10.
Trailing 50-48 after three quarters, the Nor'easters dominated in the fourth to gain the victory. UNE held Southern Maine scoreless the initial 5:18 of the frame while reeling off 15 consecutive points. Vose had five points during the spurt, which culminated with a Meghan Gribbin (SR/Windham, Maine) bucket to give UNE a 63-50 cushion with 5:55 on the clock.
The Nor'easters would make 7 of 8 free throw attempts in the final minute to seal the victory.
The next opponent for each team is Bates College. UNE hosts the Bobcats Saturday at 1 p.m., and the Huskies entertain Bates next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
