Bowdoin Scores Three Second Half Goals, Defeats USM 4-0

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College Polar Bears scored three goals in the final 26 minutes of the game to pull away from the University of Southern Maine Huskies for a 4-0 win in a non-conference men's soccer game Tuesday evening.

The win is the second straight for the Polar Bears who improve to 4-2-2 overall. The Polar Bears are undefeated in their last four games (2-0-2). Southern Maine falls to 1-8-1 with the loss.

Despite yielding an early 1-0 lead as Bowdoin senior Hunter Miller (Aurora, Ill./Benet Academy) converted an assist from sophomore Sam Ward (Wellesley Hills, Mass./Saint Marks School) in the 11th minute, Southern Maine was able to keep the Polar Bears off of the board for the remainder of the half.

Bowdoin continued to pressure the Huskies' defense in the second half, but was unable to put one past freshman goalkeeper Simon Hulbert (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island). Bowdoin freshman Jake Stenquist (Hudson, Mass./Rivers School) made it 2-0 in favor of the Polar Bears in the 64th minute.  Fifteen minutes later Bowdoin made it a 3-0 game with a score from senior Colton Hall (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) in the 79th.  Freshman Moctar Niang (New York, N.Y./Dalton School) finished the scoring notching a late goal in the 86th minute for the 4-0 final.

            Hulbert made 12 saves in the loss for the Huskies.   Bowdoin sophomore Stevie Van Siclen (Carlisle, Mass./The Rivers School) made one save to earn the shut out.  Bowdoin held a 33-1 advantage in shots and an 8-0 lead in corner kicks.

Southern Maine remains on the road this Saturday (1:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference game at UMass Dartmouth. Bowdoin travels to Trinity (Conn.) on Saturday (1:30 p.m.) for a NESCAC match up.
