Boghosian Lifts Southern Maine Over UMass Dartmouth 1-0

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine – Senior Jessica Boghosian (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee) converted a penalty stroke in the 65th minute to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 1-0 win over UMass Dartmouth Corsairs in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

With the win, Southern Maine ends a four-game losing streak and improves its overall record to 5-7 and 2-3 in the Little East.  The Huskies had lost their last two Little East Conference matchups in overtime in 1-0.  UMass Dartmouth, which entered the game undefeated in the Little East and riding a three-game winning streak, drops its record to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the Little East.

UMD dominated the offensive statistical categories holding a 19-5 edge in shots and a 23-6 margin in penalty corners, but could not beat Husky junior goalkeeper Amanda Kasbohm (York, Maine).  The Corsairs looked to take the lead in the 48th minute when they were awarded a penalty stroke.  UMD junior Hunter Carden (Branford, Conn.) lined up to take the shot and hit a solidly struck ball to the lower right side of the cage, but Kasbohm was there making a diving stick save to keep the score at 0-0.

Southern Maine was able to get one of its few penalty corners late in the game when a five-yard infraction was called on a UMD defender to help create the penalty shot situation.  With the stroke awarded to USM, Boghosian stepped to the line and struck a low shot to the left of the cage past an outstretched Corsair goalkeeper sophomore Allison Burke (Franklin, Mass.).  Burke finished with one save in the loss, while Kasbohm earned her third shutout of the season making 12 saves.

Southern Maine hosts Keene State in a Little East Conference match up on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.).  UMass Dartmouth hosts Framingham State on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.) in an Little East Conference match.
