USM Downs Bridgewater State and UNE at Wildcat Classic

            PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The University of Southern Maine women's volleyball got back on the winning track Saturday with a pair of non-conference victories over Bridgewater State University and the University of New England in the final day of play at the Johnson & Wales University Wildcat Classic.

            The Huskies defeated Bridgewater State in their first match 3-1 (25-12, 20-25, 25-16, 25-18), and came back later to knock off UNE 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-19).  The win over BSU snapped a three-match losing skid for the Huskies, and improved their overall record to 8-10.  USM went 2-2 in the two-day tournament.

            Sophomore outside hitter Jess Williamson (Goffstown, N.H.) pounded down 38 kills in the two matches Saturday to pace the offensive attack.  Senior libero Demi Ruder (Grand Junction, Colo.), who was named to the All-Tournament team (see below), had 23 combined digs.

            In the opening match against Bridgewater State, Williamson had 19 kills and a .306 attack percentage (19-4-49) to go along with eight digs and two service aces.  Classmate Mo Raymond (Sanbornton, N.H.) added 10 kills on 26 attacks.  Junior setter Megan Nilson (Granby, Conn.) had a double-double passing out 17 assists and digging up 16 balls.  Rookie setter Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) added 21 assists and three aces.  Rookie Cassi Baumann (Salida, Calif./Joseph Gregori) shared match-high honors for digs with 18, and Ruder had 14 digs.

            For Bridgewater State, junior outside hitter Hannah Maymon (Narragansett, R.I.) had 14 kills and 12 digs, and junior setter Charleyne Panner (Gilford, N.H.) passed out 32 assists and had 14 digs for double-doubles.  Rookie libero Cassidy Tyros (Chelmsford, Mass.) shared match-high dig honors with Baumann with 18.

            Against UNE, Williamson had another big match knocking down 19 kills on a .459 attack percentage (19-2-37) and serving three aces.  Schmitz (15) and Nilson (14) combined for 29 assists, and Ruder led all players with nine digs.  The Huskies served 12 aces in the match and combined for a .329 attack percentage (38-10-85).

            Sophomore middle hitter Courtney Lambrese (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) had 10 kills for UNE.  Classmate Kristen Falcinelli (Silver Spring, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) collected 17 assists.

            Southern Maine will be on the road on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference match at Keene State College.
