Box Score GORHAM, Maine – Seniors Finn Ducker (Winslow, Maine) and McGyver Poulin (Windham, Maine) each scored goals to lead the University of New England Noreasters to a 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's soccer game Monday evening at Hannaford Field.
The win snapped a 10-match losing streak for UNE and improves its overall record to 3-13. Southern Maine falls to 1-11-1 with the loss.
After a scoreless first half, UNE struck first taking a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute. Ducker scored his second goal of the season on a quick give-and-go from junior Erik Holmqvist (Gothenburg, Sweden/Jensen). The score remained in 1-0 in favor of the Noreasters for the next 10 minutes with neither team generating a solid scoring opportunity despite two corner kicks a piece.
UNE doubled its advantage in the 61st minute as Poulin bodied in his first goal of the season, cleaning up a deflected header attempt from Homqvist in the box. Down two goals, the Huskies answered Poulin's goal quickly scoring less than a minute later in the 62nd minute. Husky senior William Pearsall (Garland, Maine/Dexter Regional) rocketed in his first goal of the game off of a USM set piece. Sophomore Ibrahim Mohamed (Lewiston, Maine) played the free kick into the box, finding the head of junior Kyle Curley (Gorham, Maine). Curley played the ball to his left finding Pearsall for the near-post goal. With nearly 30 minutes to play, USM threatened for the equalizer but were unable to find the back of the net.
Freshman Jake Rostkowski (Rockport, Mass.) earned the win in goal for UNE making four saves. Husky freshman Simon Hulbert (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) was tagged with the loss making three saves. Both teams played evenly with 12 shots a piece, with UNE holding a slight 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Southern Maine hosts UMaine Farmington on Thursday (7:30 p.m.) in a reschedule contest. USM and UMF will play at Deering High School in Portland, Maine. UNE travels to Gordon College for a Commonwealth Coast Conference match on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.).
