Box Score GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Chandler Guerrette (Presque Isle, Maine) had 21 oints to lead five players in double figures as the Husson University Eagles stunned the University of Southern Maine Huskies 79-77 in overtime in a non-conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at Hill Gymnasium.
The win snaps a two-game losing streak for the Eagles who improve to 5-4 with the win. It is the first win for Husson over Southern Maine in 21 years, when Husson earned a 75-71 win on January 1, 1994. The Huskies drop their third straight to even out at 6-6.
Guerrette was 7-for-17 from the field knocking down three three-pointers adding six assists and five rebounds. Senior Samira Cruz (Orlando, Fla./Edgewater) added 17 points including five three-pointers, while senior Stephanie Comstock (Bangor, Maine) tossed in 13 points. Junior Victoria McIntyre (Mars Hill, Maine/Central Aroostook) and sophomore Katy Brochu (Bangor, Maine) each had 10 points.
Huskies' junior forward Megan Pelletier (Winslow, Maine/Messalonskee) had an outstanding night in the loss, scoring a career-high 33 points on 12-for-19 shooting and earning a double-double with a team-high 10 rebounds. Seniors Stephanie Gallagher (York, Maine), Rebecca Knight (Alfred, Maine/McAuley) and Taylor Flood (Sanford, Maine) each had eight points. Gallagher had seven rebounds, while Knight had eight boards and a game-high six assists.
In a closely played game, the Huskies led by as many as 10 points, 36-26, early in the second half. The Eagles rallied on multiple occasions and were able to knot the score up at 66-66 with 1:07 to play in regulation on a three from Cruz. Pelletier put the Huskies ahead 68-66 in their next possession, but Brochu hit a tough shot in the paint with 39 seconds to play eventually forcing overtime as both teams squander a possession.
In the overtime period, USM jumped out to a 75-70 lead with 2:41 to play on a pair of free throws from Knight, but the Eagles countered with five straight points of their own on two free throws from Comstock and a game-tying three from Cruz with 59 seconds to play.
USM went ahead 77-75 on its next possession as junior Gretchen Anderson (Kittery Point, Maine/St. Thomas Aquinas) sank two free throws, but the Eagles sandwiched a layup from Comstock and a game-winner jumper from Guerrette with six second to play around a USM miss for the win.
Southern Maine hosts UMass Dartmouth in a Little East Conference game on Saturday (1:00 p.m.). Husson hosts Maine Maritime on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) in a North Atlantic Conference game.
