Western Connecticut Pulls Away from Southern Maine in Second Half, 73-52

            GORHAM, Maine  –  Senior Caroline Brasa (East Hartford, Conn./East Catholic) scored a career-high 29 points to lead the Western Connecticut State University Colonials to a 73-52 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's basketball Saturday at Hill Gymnasium. 

            With the win, the Colonials 11-5 overall and 3-4 in the Little East Conference. Southern Maine falls to 8-9 with the loss and 4-3 in the conference.  The two teams have split their season series. 

            Brasa was an outstanding 11-for-15 from the field en route to her career and game total.  She added a team-high seven rebounds.  Sophomore Colleen Cosker (East Hartford, Conn./Cheney Tech) added 20 points on 8-for-13 shooting, adding four assists.

            Senior Stephanie Gallagher (York, Maine) and junior Ella Ramonas (Portland, Maine/Deering) each had 10 points for Southern Maine, while freshman Miranda Nicely (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue). 

            The game was closely played in the first half with the Colonials holding a slim 35-31 edge at the break.  Brasa scored 16 of her 29 points in the first half.  Western Connecticut shot 53.6 percent (15-for-28), while the Huskies connected on 50.0 percent (12-for-24).

            In the second half, Southern Maine's shooting percentage dropped to 33.3 percent and the Colonials opened the half on a 11-4 run to grab a double-digit, 46-35 lead at the break.  The Colonials maintained their advantage, leading 55-44 with 9:27 to play and then added a 7-0 run to break open the game and lead 62-44 with 6:00 to play.  Brasa and Cosker combined to score all seven of the Colonials points in the run.

            Southern Maine returns to action on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.) when it travels to UMass Boston for its next contest.
