Husson Defeats Southern Maine 3-1

            BANGOR, Maine – Three different players scored to lead the Husson University Eagles to a 3-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies at the Husson University Eagles Cup in a non-conference men's soccer game Friday night in Bangor, Maine.

            With the win, Husson improves to 2-1 on the season.  Southern Maine suffers its third straight set back to stand at 0-3.  

            Husson junior Cam Libbey (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) put the Eagles on the board in the 26th minute.  Libbey benefitted from a double assist from juniors Stephen Berenyl (Levant, Maine/Calvary Chapel Christian) and Alain Tuyishime (Rwanda, Africa/Portland) to lift the Eagles to a 1-0 lead that would stand through the half.

            In the second half, junior Phil Frost (Bangor, Maine) headed in a throw in from sophomore Josh Bean (Ellsworth, Maine) to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the 57th minute. The Huskies trimmed the Eagles lead to a single goal in the 71st when senior Tyler Rand (Westbrook, Maine) blasted in an unassisted strike for his first goal of the season.  Ahead 2-1 and with the Huskies' threatening for an equalizer, Husson was able to seal the win with an insurance goal in the 89th minute off of the head of junior Michael Curtis (Ellsworth, Maine). 

            USM sophomore goalkeeper Elijah Leverett (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) made seven saves in the loss.  Husson senior Brian Potter (Waterville, Maine/Erskine Academy) turned back five Huskies' shots to earn the win.  Husson held an 18-11 advantage in shots, while the Huskies had a 6-1 lead in corner kicks. 

            Southern Maine faces Maine Maritime on Saturday (5:00 p.m.) in the final day of the Husson University Eagles Cup. Husson will host Gordon College on Saturday (7:30 p.m.).
