Demers Scores OT Game-Winner, USM Defeats Salem State 2-1

Box Score
SALEM, Mass. – Sophomore Michaela Demers (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial) scored the game-winning goal four minutes and 42 seconds into the overtime period to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-1 win over the Salem State University Vikings in a Little East Conference field hockey game Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Demers' goal snapped a two-game slide for the Huskies and improves their record to 5-5 overall and 2-2 in the Little East.  The loss is the fourth straight for Salem State dropping its record to 1-8 overall and 0-4 in the LEC.

Salem State led the Huskies 1-0 until late in the game.  Despite being outshot 7-2 in the opening half, Viking senior Kelsey Russell (Arlington, Mass.) had her team in the lead in the 20th minute converting an assist from junior Micaela Keogh (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial). Russell's second goal of the season stood through the break as SSU sophomore goalkeeper Carolyn Woodin (Arlington, Mass.) made six of her eight saves of the game in the first half.

In the second half, the Huskies continued to trail Salem State 1-0 before junior captain Allison Ward (Rockland, Maine/Oceanside) netted her fourth goal of the season in the 65th minute to force the overtime action.  Ward benefitted from an assist from senior captain Peyton Dostie (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle). The assist was Dostie's team-leading fourth of the season.

Demers worked quickly in the overtime period to record the first game-winning goal of her career and second goal of the season to lift the Huskies to a win.

Woodin finished the game making eight saves in the loss as USM outshot the Vikings 12-7.  The Huskies also enjoyed a 9-4 advantage in penalty corners. Sophomore Amanda Kasbohm (York, Maine) made two saves in the win, while sophomore Allana Agren (Cumberland, Maine/McAuley) was credited with a defensive save.

Southern Maine travels to Bates on Thursday (6:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game.  Salem State hosts UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) in a Little East Conference match.
