Southern Maine, Plymouth State Fight to Double Overtime Draw

            PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman goalkeeper Charles Mull (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) made 10 saves over 120 minutes of action as the University of Southern Maine Huskies battled to a double overtime draw with the Plymouth State University Panthers in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Friday evening at the New Hampton School.

            It is the third overtime match (1-0-2) this season for the Huskies who stand at 1-7-2 following the draw with the Panthers, snapping a three-game winless streak. In the conference, Southern Maine is now 0-1-1.  The Panthers are now 2-5-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the conference.

            The Panthers outshot the Huskies 22-5, including 10-2 in shots on goal, but were unable to unable to beat Mull who earned his first collegiate shutout. Mull made three saves in the first half, four in the second and three in the overtime periods, including two in the final minutes to keep the score sheet clean. In the final minutes of regulation, Mull came up with a two pivotal saves, stopping a shot from PSU freshman Nick Rutherford (Batesman Bay, New South Wales) and then halted a rebound attempt from junior Petro Masumbuko (Manchester, N.H./Central) from point blank range.

            "Charlie played an outstanding match for us," noted Southern Maine head coach Mike Keller.  "He turned in a tremendous performance and made several big saves that helped us come away draw in a conference match."

            Panther sophomore Felix Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) made two saves for Plymouth State to earn his first shutout of the season.

Southern Maine remains on the road for its next game and will play at UMaine Farmington on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.).  Plymouth State travels to Norwich on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.).
