Men's Soccer

Colby Slips By Southern Maine 2-0

Box Score
GORHAM, Maine  – Junior Dan Vogel (Lexington, Mass./Noble and Greenough) and senior  Charlie Dupee (Scarborough, Maine/Deering) each scored goals late in the second half to lead the Colby College Mules to a 2-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's soccer game Tuesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

Winners of two of their last three games, the Mules inch above .500 to stand at 4-3 overall.  Southern Maine drops to 1-7-1 with the loss.

In an evenly played match, the score remained locked at 0-0 until the 74th minute when Vogel broke through for the first goal of the game and his first goal of the season.  Vogel blasted in the eventual game winner when sophomore Luke Andrews (Cumberland, Maine/Falmouth) deftly chested the ball to a wide-open Vogel in the box.  Vogel one-timed the ball into the top right of the corner for a 1-0 Colby lead.  Colby gained an insurance goal less than a minute later when Dupee notched his second goal of the season off of an assist from senior Keith Chernin (Chestnut Hill, Mass./Brooklin).  Vogel and Dupee's goals were just 50 seconds apart at 73:46 and 74:36.

The Huskies had several outstanding opportunities before the Colby goals.  Husky junior Harrison Hall (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) broke free in the 69th minute only to have his shot stymied by Colby senior goalkeeper Cody Funkhouser (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) who rushed off of his line to close down the space.  Hall's shot rebounded to senior Tyler Rand (Westbrook, Maine), and Rand had a good crack at the goal, but Funkhouser was able to scramble to make the save.

Hall almost got one back for the Huskies late in the 88th minute with a powerful shot that was partially blocked by a Colby defender and then cleared off the line by Mule senior Jonathan Stronach (Concord, Mass./Brooks) as the ball crept towards the line.

Funkhouser made six saves to earn the shutout for the Mules.  Sophomore goalkeeper Elijah Leverett (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) made four saves in the loss.  The Mules had a narrow 11-9 in shots and a 3-2 lead in corner kicks.

Southern Maine returns to action on Friday (6:30 p.m.) at Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference match.  Colby hosts Middlebury College on Saturday (1:30 p.m.) in a NESCAC game.
