Husson Sinks Southern Maine 2-0

Box Score
GORHAM, Maine  – Sophomores Sarah Eastman (Dexter, Maine) and Taylor Lovely (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine) each scored a goal to lead the Husson University Eagles to a 2-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the final game of the 2014 USM Invitational Sunday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

The win is the second straight for the Eagles who begin their 2014 season with a 2-0 mark.  Southern Maine slides to 1-1 with the loss after opening its season with a 3-2 win over Manhattanville College.

In an evenly played contest, Eastman broke through for the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute.  With a scrum forming in front of the net, Eastman was able to get her stick on the ball and beat USM freshman goalkeeper Angela Porrazzo (Attleboro, Mass.) for a 1-0 lead which held through the half.

Both teams continued to play a fairly even game with multiple scoring opportunities before Lovely registered a late insurance goal for Husson in the 66th minute.  Following a flurry of activity in front of the USM net, Lovley collected a rebound off of a shot from junior Olivia Plaisted (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) to secure the win for the Eagles.

Porrazzo played well in the loss making eight saves on 11 Eagles' shots.  Husson sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlin Doloff (Richmond, R.I./Chariho) earned the shut out making seven saves, including turning back a near equalizer in the final minutes of the game.  Husson narrowly outshot USM 11-8 and had a 10-8 advantage in penalty corners.

Southern Maine hits the road for its next contest and will face Gordon College on Thursday (7:00 p.m.) in Wenham, Mass. Husson University travels to the University of New England on Wednesday (6:00 p.m.) for its next game.
