Box Score NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Senior Erika Bornemann (Canton, Mass.) had 24 points,10 rebounds and six blocked shots to lead the UMass Dartmouth Corsiars to a 64-59 overtime win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Tripp Athletic Center.
With the win, UMass Dartmouth improves to 12-9 overall and 5-5 in the Little East Conference. The loss stops a five-game win streak for the Huskies and drops their record to 14-7 overall and 6-4 in the LEC.
Bornemann led all scorers with an 8-for-25 effort from the field. Junior Kelsey Garrity (Somerville, Mass./St. Mary's) and freshman Ashley Brown (Fairhaven, Mass.) each scored 12 points for the Corsairs. Garrity added eight rebounds and three assists, while Brown dished out six assists, grabbed four rebounds and had a pair of steals.
Junior forward Rebecca Knight (Alfred, Maine/McAuley) led the Huskies with 16 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Senior guard Erin McNamara (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) added 11 points, and junior guard Stephanie Gallagher (York, Maine) played a strong game off of the bench with 10 points, five rebounds and a career and game-high seven assists.
The Corsairs overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to earn the win. Brown sank three free throws at the 6:24 mark to pull UMass Dartmouth even with the Huskies at 40-40, before both teams battled it out through regulation. Freshman Megan Ronaghan (North Attleboro, Mass.) sank a trio of free throws with 5:10 to play to give the Corsairs a 45-41 advantage, before the Huskies rallied to knot the score up at 45-45 on a pair of free throws from Knight with 3:29 to play. From there both teams exchanged points and Bornemann gave the Corsairs a two-point advantage, 50-48, with 29 seconds to play before McNamara made a jumper on an assist from Gallagher forcing overtime.
In overtime, junior Meghan Keohane's (Mansfield, Mass.) jumper off of a Brown assist on the Corsairs first possession gave UMass Dartmouth the lead for good. The Huskies' traded points with the Corsairs and trailed 59-57 with 1:05 to play. After missed possessions by both teams, Ronaghan hit two free throws for a 61-57 Corsair lead with 24 seconds to play. Forced to foul, the Huskies put UMass Dartmouth on the line and the Corsairs made them count for the win.
Southern Maine travels to Plymouth State on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.). UMass Dartmouth hosts UMass Boston on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.).
