#3 Norwich Shuts Out Southern Maine 4-0

            NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- The third-ranked Norwich University women's ice team posted its second shutout of the weekend with a 4-0 decision Saturday afternoon over visiting University of Southern Maine in an ECAC Women's East game at Kreitzberg Arena.

            The win was the second straight for the Cadets who improved to 2-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in league play.  The Huskies dropped their second straight game to fall to 0-2-0 overall and in the league.

            The Cadets tallied the only goal of the first period just 52 seconds into the stanza.  Sophomore Adelle Murphy (Roseau, Minn.) tipped a shot from junior Taylor Cross (Saugus, Mass.) past USM senior goalie Liz Bergstrom (Chanhassen, Minn.) for her first goal of the season.

            Southern Maine responded though, outplaying Norwich for a majority of the period, and even outshot the home side 7-3.  Norwich sophomore goalie Celeste Robert (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) stood tall stopping all seven shots.

            Norwich took control of the game in the middle period adding two goals to its lead.  Freshman Erin Joyce (Manchester, N.H.) finished off a 2-on-1 with classmate Sarah Schwenzfeier (Hingham, Mass.) at 4:38 to make it 2-0.  Cross earned her second assist of the game helping set up senior Madyson Moore (Dubuque, Iowa) for a goal in the final minute of the period.

            Cross completed the scoring tacking up a power-play goal late in the third period with Murphy collecting one of the assists.

            Robert finished the game with 11 saves to register her second shutout of the season.  Bergstrom stopped 20 shots in the Husky cage.

            Southern Maine plays its home opener next Friday (4:00 p.m.) entertaining St. Michael's College.  Norwich hits the road next Friday (4:00 p.m.) traveling to New England College.
