Rhode Island College Blanks Southern Maine 4-0

           GORHAM, Maine  – Senior Emmanuel Asiedu (Lincoln, R.I.) had two goals and an assist to lead the Rhode Island College Anchormen to a 4-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

            The win is the second straight for the Anchormen who improve to 10-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the Little East Conference.  Southern Maine is 2-13-2 overall and 0-5-1 in the conference.

            The Anchormen took an early 1-0 lead as Asiedu headed in a well-placed service from junior Jose Zarraga (Providence, R.I./Classical) in the seventh minute.  Despite the early RIC score and an 11-2 advantage in first half shots, the score held at 1-0 in favor of the Anchormen through the half. 

            USM kept the deficit at one goal for the first 20 minutes of the second half, but RIC rang up three goals in the final 25 minutes for the 4-0 final.  Freshman Komla Dogbey (Providence, R.I./Hope) benefitted from a loose ball in the six after an Asiedu shot on goal cleaning up the rebound for his eight goal of the season in the 65th minute.  Twelve minutes later, Asiedu increased the RIC lead to three goals with his team-leading 12th goal of the season converting a penalty kick in the 78th minute after being brought down in the box.   RIC's final goal came in the closing second of regulation as junior Steven Cataldo (Attleboro, Mass.) notched his second goal of the season in the 90th minute with a near-post strike.

            RIC freshman goalkeeper Adam Ghazal (Pawtucket, R.I./Tolman) made two saves in the win.  Southern Maine freshman Charles Mull (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) took the loss playing the first half making three saves and allowing one goal.  Sophomore Elijah Leverett (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) made five saves and allowed three goals in the final 45 minutes. RIC had a 23-6 advantage in shots and an 8-2 lead in corner kicks.

            Southern Maine hosts traditional rival Salem State University on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) in a non-conference game.  Rhode Island College hosts Johnson & Wales on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) in a non-conference game.
