Box Score GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore forward Megan Pelletier (Winslow, Maine/Messalonskee) scored a season-best 18 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 68-31 Little East Conference win over the Plymouth State University Panthers Tuesday night at Hill Gym.
With the win, Southern Maine improves its record to 10-6 overall and 3-3 in the Little East. Plymouth State dips to 2-12 and 1-5 in the conference.
Pelletier was 6-for-7 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free throw line as the Huskies shot 46.6 percent from the field for the game. Pelletier added three steals, two blocked shots and an assist. Sophomore Gretchen Anderson (Kittery Point, Maine/St. Thomas Aquinas) added 14 points on a 7-for-10 effort from the field, matching Pelletier with six rebounds and adding three assists. Seniors Erin McNamara (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) and Mariah Callender (Portland, Maine) each chipped in with seven points. McNamara had a solid all-around game with a game-best six assist and two steals. Callender added six boards and two blocked shots.
Savannah Miller and Kait Deering each led the Panthers with six points as the Huskies held Plymouth State to a 22.6 percent (12-for-53) shooting performance. Miller had five steals for the Panthers.
Ahead by six, 17-11, Southern Maine outscored the Panthers 18-9 over the final 10 minutes of the opening half. The Huskies moved the ball well during the run as six different players factored in the run, led by six points from Pelletier for a 35-20 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Huskies clamped down defensively and opening on a 15-2 spurt in the first five minutes to blow open the game. Pelletier scored six points in the run, while McNamara scored five of her seven points on a layup and a three as USM led 50-22 with 15:16 to play.
A layup from the Panthers' Tiffany Lewis halted the Huskies' scoring for a 50-24 USM lead with 14:58 on the clock, but it was the Panthers' last field goal until the 9:41 mark. USM allowed the Panthers just four second half field goals and three free throws for a total of 11 points in the second half as they cruised to the win.
Southern Maine travels to Western Connecticut on Saturday (1:00 p.m.). Plymouth State travels to UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
