Southern Maine Sweeps Curry and Massachusetts Maritime

MILTON, Mass.  – Freshman Kristina Rubico (Chelmsford, Mass.) had 12 kills, 13 digs and two service aces to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a thrilling 3-2 win over the Curry College Colonels as the Huskies earned a pair of victories in a non-conference tri-match in Milton, Mass.  USM defeated Curry 3-2 (25-13, 19-25, 25-23, 22-25 and 15-7) and then earned a three-game sweep over the Masschusetts Maritime Bucaneers 3-0 (25-10, 25-4 and 25-10).

Earning its third consecutive win, Southern Maine improves to 4-1 overall, signifying its best start since 2004 when the Huskies were 4-1 through five matches.  Curry fell to 1-4 with the loss, while the Buccaneers remained winless at 0-2.

Rubico posted her career-high in kills on 38 attempts and one error for a respectable .289 kill percentage.  Freshman Alyssa Melanson (Merrimack, N.H.) added eight kills, while sophomore Kelsey Abramson (Deerfield, Mass./Frontier Regional) swung for seven kills.  Abramson added four service aces, six digs and two blocks. Freshman setter Megan Nilson (Granby, Conn.) had 18 assists and 14 digs.

Against Massachusetts Maritime, Rubico again paced the USM attack with five kills and four aces.  Sophomore defensive specialist Bridget Burns (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville) added nine aces and nine digs. 

Southern Maine hosts Castleton State and UMaine Machias on Sunday (11:00 a.m.) in a pair of non-conference matches.
