Huskies, Eagles Play to 2-2 Draw

BANGOR, Maine -- Sophomore Michael Daniel (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) scored in the 57th minute to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 2-2 overtime tie with the host Husson University Eagles Saturday night in the second day of action at the 2nd Annual New Balance Challenge Cup.

USM, winless this season at 0-3-1, played its first tie since playing to a 1-1 draw with the University of Maine Farmington on October 12, 2010.  Husson, also seeking its first win in 2013, is now 0-3-1.

Tied 1-1 at halftime, Husson grabbed the lead in the 55th minute when freshman Antone Cooper (Hampden, Maine) found the back of the net off an assist from junior Andrew Austin (Ellsworth, Maine).

Less than two minutes later, Daniel took a feed from junior Tyler Rand (Westbrook, Maine) and beat Husson junior goalkeeper Brian Potter (Waterville, Maine/Erskine Academy) for his first goal of the season.

The teams would play through the remaining 33 minutes of regulation time and two 10-minute overtime periods before settling for the tie.

In the opening half, Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when Rand scored the Huskies' first goal of the season after 286 scoreless minutes.

Husson needed less than two minutes to get the equalizer as freshman Jimmy Fitzpatrick (Houlton, Maine) scored his third goal of the season converting an assist from classmate Joshua Bean (Ellsworth, Maine).

Freshman goalkeeper Adam Verreault (Poland, Maine) earned the tie in his first career start for Southern Maine.  Verreault finished the game making two saves.  Potter made two saves before leaving the match due to a red card in the 63rd minute.  Rookie Brian Paquette (Ferrisburgh, Vt./Vergennes Union) came on to preserve the tie recording four saves.

Southern Maine will be on the road for its fifth straight match on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) traveling to Saint Joseph's College.  Husson will travel down I-95 on Tuesday (4:30 p.m.) to play at Colby College.
