Box Score GORHAM, Maine – Freshman Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) redirected a pass from senior back Carly Denis (Lewiston, Maine) in the 11th minute to lead the St. Joseph's College Monks to a 3-0 shut out win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference field hockey game Wednesday at Hannaford Field.
The loss is the fourth consecutive for the Huskies who fall to 3-6 overall. St. Joseph's, who has yet to play a game at home this season, remains undefeated at 6-0.
The Monks pressured the Huskies early and often outshooting USM 9-1 in the opening half and had an identical advantage in penalty corners. After the Dumond goal, the Monks took a 2-0 lead into the break when sophomore Amanda Celata (Dedham, Mass.) drove in a pass from Rachelle Messuri (Atkinson, N.H./Timberlane Regional) in the 26th minute.
Messuri scored the Monks final goal with her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 40th minute. Messuri broke away from Southern Maine defense and then rocketed in a shot from the top of the circle.
Freshman goalkeeper Emma Astbury (Bridgewater, Vt./Woodstock) earned the shut out for the Monks making five saves. Senior goalkeeper Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) took the loss making nine saves. USM sophomore Jessica Boghosian (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee) made a defensive save for the Huskies.
St. Joseph's finished the game with a 15-6 edge in shots and an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Southern Maine hosts Keene State College on Saturday (2:30 p.m.) in a Little East Conference game. St. Joseph's College returns to GNAC action hosting Rivier on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).
