No. 8 Bowdoin Downs Southern Maine 9-1

BRUNSWICK, Maine  – Senior Katie Riley (Hingham, Mass./Phillips Andover) and junior Pam Herter (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) each scored two goals to lead the eighth-ranked Bowdoin College Polar Bears to a 9-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference field hockey game Tuesday night in Brunswick, Maine.

Ranked in the top ten in the latest NFHCA poll, Bowdoin improves to 3-1 with the win.  The Huskies, suffering their second consecutive loss, dip to 3-4 overall.

Junior Colleen Finnerty (Hopkinton, Mass.) started the scoring in the 12th minute for the Polar Bears and Riley tacked on the eventual game-winner in the 14th minutes as Bowdoin grabbed a 3-0 lead to head into the halftime break.   Herter added the third goal of the opening stanza in the 24th minute. 

Riley wasted little time increasing the Polar Bear lead to 4-0 notching her second goal of the game just 48 seconds into the half.  Bowdoin added two more goals, including Herter's second of the game, before the 50-minute mark to lead USM handily 7-0 with 20 minutes remaining.  

The Polar Bears tacked on two more goals in the 57th and 64th minutes to lead 9-0.  Southern Maine broke up the shut out with just 13 seconds remaining in the contest when freshman Leanne Reichert (Portland, Maine) tallied her first collegiate goal off of an assist from junior forward Peyton Dostie (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle).

Bowdoin junior Hanna Gartner (Reisterstown, Md./Friends School) made one save in the win.  USM freshman goalkeeper Amanda Kasbohm (York, Maine) made 15 saves as Bowdoin outshot the Huskies 38-2.   

Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) when it travels to Eastern Connecticut for a Little East Conference game.  Bowdoin hosts Middlebury on Saturday (11:00 a.m.)
