Box Score BANGOR, Maine – Freshman Kristina Rubico (Chelmsford, Mass.) continued her strong play fresh off of earning Little East Conference Rookie of the Week honors swinging for a match-high 14 kills on 30 attempts for a solid 36.7 hitting percentage to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-1 win over the Husson University Eagles in a non-conference women's volleyball match Tuesday evening at Newman Gym. USM defeated Husson 25-17, 22-25, 25-14 and 25-14.
With its sixth consecutive win, Southern Maine improves to 7-1 overall. The Huskies' six consecutive victories is the most since the 1976 season when the Huskies' set the school record for consecutive wins with eight. The loss dips Husson's record to 3-6 overall.
Sophomores Renee Trottier (Biddeford, Maine) and Jessica Garrett (Waterboro, Maine/Palo Verde (NV)) each had eight kills for the Huskies, while freshman Megan Nilson (Granby, Conn.) coordinated the USM attack with 27 assists, while chipping in with three service aces. Sophomore Demi Ruder led the Huskies' defensively with 17 digs.
Husson freshman Kristen Atwood (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) led the Eagles with seven kills on 14 attempts without and error for an outstanding 50.0 hitting percentage. Freshman Kara Graham (East Machias, Maine/Washington Academy) had a match-high 22 digs, while freshman Lindsay Chapman (Gorham, Maine) added 13 digs and four solo blocks.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) at Framingham State for a tri-match with St. Joseph's (Conn.). Husson hosts Bates College on Wednesday (6:00 p.m.).
